The Lightweight Directory Access Pprotocol (LDAP) is an IBM standard for communicating computers with a database over the Internet. The extensive X.500 Directory Service has been streamlined to allow fast communication even with a narrow bandwidth. Entries in an LDAP or X.500 directory allow access via a network or the Internet to find data. Trustcenters usually use this protocol to store certificate information. The LDAP protocol can be used worldwide to retrieve the public certificates (Public Keys, PKCS#7) from the individual trust centers (CA's), which are used to encrypt data.
